Lilly : It's more than failed when you bring home guys who hit you and steal from you.
Ellen : What happened? You fell, right?
Fiancé : A broken jaw is horrible.
Ellen : She used to run out in the middle of the night. I can't believe I even slept, I'd, I'd worry so much.
Lilly : I was attacked. I didn't fall.
Ellen : We lived in some bad neighborhoods.

Jackie her 4th husband left her 5 months ago. Ellen has started drinking again.
Lilly gets her out of jail and then takes care of her (clean the apartment, fill up the fridge).

Ellen is diagnosed a late stage Cirrhosis. She starts living at Lilly's place.

Ellen doesn't stop drinking.
Lilly : Mom,the doctor said if you drink any more,you're going to die. It's that simple.
Ellen : Doctor has it backwards. I die if I don't.
Lilly : I always wondered who that drunk woman was driving me to school.
Ellen : Well,maybe you should have asked your father for a ride.
Lilly : If you hadn't sent him packing.
Ellen : He left. I stayed. Do you remember you used to have those bad dreams? I would read to you all night just to calm you down. I was there, Lilly.
Lilly : And now you're just making stuff up.
Ellen : My mother used to work so hard. Eight hours a day at a department store,and then... back home,make dinner for us. I was always so proud of her.
