Bill Shepard's suicide note, Paul's murder "blueprint", says:
Paul, I can't do this anymore. I am nothing. Less than nothing. This world is full of people willing to kick you when you're down like the secretary too blind to realize she worked for thieves. Like the repo men devoid of common human decency. Like the judgmental bus driver who offered nothing but pity. Finally, to my son Paul, I'm sorry I'm too weak to take you with me. I tried to make something special. But nobody seems to care. Nobody ever will. Dad.
1980s killings: Felicity Andrews, Preston Schmall, Tim Hudson (injured) and Fred Norris are the people mentioned in the letter, responsible for Bill Shepard's failure.
An FBI agent was possibly the last victim of the serial killer. However in Free Love, Yates states that Paul Shepard murdered nine people, all of whom are accounted for, indicating the agent's wound was not fatal.
East of Eden is seen watched in 1978, 1980 and 2010 and every time, nobody seem to care except Paul Shepard.
