Stillman asks Lilly to look at the Barnes cold case he worked, even if there is no new lead. Later :
Lilly : You buying baby furniture?
Stillman : No, it's my daughter. She's pregnant.
Lilly : How far along?
Stillman : A couple of months. I just found out.

Lilly : So is that the new direction? Hearing your daughter's pregnant?
Stillman : It got me thinking about this case, yeah, and feeling guilty.
Lilly : About what?
Stillman : I was working the Barnes job when my daughter was born. Yeah, I missed her birth completely. My wife, uh, wasn't pleased. I lost my marriage over a case I couldn't even solve.
Stillman: I've been there with my stockbroker. [a place called Arbitrage]
Lil: You're in the market, boss?
Stillman: Half of America is, Lil.
Jeffries: Not my half.
Stillman: I'll give my broker a call, see what he know about Danville and the company he used to work for.
Stillman's broker is Mackie.
Woman : You swing?
Stillman : Excuse me?
Lilly : She means dance.
Stillman : Right, no. I'm a two left feet guy.

Stillman fought during the Vietnam war.

John Stillman put up his retirement papers, but changed his mind, thanks to Lilly's meddling.

Once we were on patrol we got caught in an ambush. We got tore up pretty bad. When the smoke cleared, I saw this Gook running towards me. I came this close to kill him. But he was Manny.
Lilly and John visit a bar where he used to go:
Stillman: Navy bar-- tied a few on here. Some things never change. I'll bet she still remembers what I drink. (to Lilly)
Bartender: John... long time no see. Irish whiskey and a beer back?
Lilly : You have a pinup girl, boss?
Stillman : Sophia Loren. Had her picture taped inside my algebra book.
Patrick Doherty was appointed to oversee the detectives bureau, making life harder to Stillman and forcing big budget cuts.
Deputy Commissioner Patrick Doherty tries to force Stillman to close the current case because of his ties to Judge Harold Alvarez and makes Miller transfered out of homicide.
Stillman locked up Matt, the son of Doherty, when he was young. This is the reason of Doherty's grudge but he's finally grateful for it.
Diane Yates, who worked at PPD with Stillman before joining the FBI, claims she broke Stillman's marriage.
Diane Yates is in Philadelphia because her mother has a stroke. Stillman keeps her company at the hospital and comforts her when she passes away.
